Solution Demand

Calculate the daily chemical solution volume required for a cooling tower program based on blowdown volume, target PTSA dosage, and solution strength. Also outputs the corresponding PTSA controller setpoint. Use this to verify the dissolver can meet daily program demand and to size the feed pump.

Understanding Solution Demand

What is solution demand?
Solution demand is the daily volume of chemical feed solution a cooling tower program needs to maintain its target dosage. It depends on blowdown (water leaving the system), the target product dosage, and the solution strength.
What is a PTSA setpoint?
The PTSA setpoint is the tracer fluorescence target a controller maintains to hold the program at its intended dosage. The calculator derives it from the target dosage so the controller can be programmed directly.
How does blowdown drive chemical demand?
Chemistry leaves a cooling system mainly through blowdown. The more a system blows down — higher makeup or lower cycles of concentration — the more chemical must be fed to replace what is lost and hold the target residual.
